Obituary for Debbie Sandra COUWENBERG

Debbie Sandra (Née Sampson) Couwenberg was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario on December 6, 1960 to proud parents Bernard and Constance (Née Champoux) Sampson. She was a loving sister to brothers Robert (Bob), Raymond (Ray), and Richard.

As a young woman, Debbie moved to Southern Ontario to pursue her education and cultivate her career in nutrition. She was an incredible mother who dearly loved her two children, Stephanie and Perry Couwenberg. A northern girl by blood, she enjoyed road trips back to Northern Ontario to visit with her family and spend time fishing. When Debbie wasn’t cooking, canning, or gardening, she could often be found cozied up in a comfortable chair enjoying a good book. A social butterfly,

Debbie made friends everywhere she went, and created strong bonds and admirable friendships with her beloved group of “hens.” Debbie also made many dear friends throughout her professional life, spending her last decade working for Sienna Living where she came to take on a leadership role as a Nutritional & Environmental Operations Partner. She was a supportive and intelligent mentor to many; she worked hard but she also made work fun for all of those around her.

She was a lively participant at the local Legions (first in Norwich, and later, in Brampton), and took the lead to organize raffles, fundraisers, and social events. Her many friends, family, and work associates along the way will always remember her giant smile, iconic laugh, contagious enthusiasm, and willingness to lend a hand.

Over the course of her life, she was always around to help her two children with many projects (especially painting). Debbie was taken too soon from her loved ones, passing away in Woodstock, ON on April 8, 2020 due to complications related to lung cancer. During her difficult battle, she was taken care of by her incredible children, who were by her side until the end.

She will be dearly missed by Stephanie and Perry Jr., the Sampson family, father of her children, Perry Couwenberg Sr. and the entire Couwenberg family, daughter-in-law Christina De Melo, and her countless friends throughout her lifetime. Debbie and all the beautiful memories she created will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted with the Arn-Lockie Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date this year. Donations in memory Debbie, may be made to the VON Oxford Sakura House, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 609 (Brampton), or the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 190 (Norwich).
