STIENSTRA
Lewis - 1923 – 2015 - It is with deep sadness that we announce that Lewis Stienstra passed away peacefully in his 92nd year on February 22nd 2015 at the Trillium Mississauga Hospital. Lewis was born in Friesland, the Netherlands on May 27th,1923, and then came to Canada with his parents Herman and Helen, and older brother Arthur in 1927, at which time they made their home in Norwich, Ontario. He was predeceased by his dearly departed wife Mary Ruth Stienstra (nee Hanmer) in 2013 after over 64 years of marriage. He was survived by son Greg (Donna Walker), daughter Carolyn (Dr. Brad Stewart), brother Albert (Wilma), brother-in-law Thomas McLaughlin and many nephews, nieces and cousins in Canada and the USA. He also was predeceased by his brother Arthur Stienstra who was an RCAF/RAF Officer and a casualty interred in a Military Cemetery in Poland. Lewis Stienstra served in the RCAF 1942-1945 as an Officer and became a flight instructor teaching commonwealth student pilots to their Wings Level in the Harvard Aircraft. Lewis graduated from the University of Toronto in 1950 with a B.Sc. degree and worked in Telecommunications and Technical and Economic Activities. He was a member of the Ontario Professional Engineers, Royal Canadian Legion Norwich Branch, Bell Retirees, and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. He also was pleased to see his daughter Carolyn enjoy flights in some of the aircraft types he had flown, particularly, the Harvard Aircraft. Lewis was a very kind and gentle man. He will surely be missed and will be forever in our hearts. Our grateful thanks go out to all the nurses and doctors at the Trillium Mississauga Hospital for their care and compassion. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Trillium Health Partners Foundation.
